Chiefs fall to Lakers

It was a tough night for the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs in Peterborough Thursday.
The Peterborough Lakers got up early and the Chiefs could claw its way back in a 9-5 loss in front of over 3,100 fans at the Memorial Centre.
Mark Steenhuis and Holden Cattoni got the Lakers on the board in the first period, with Ryan Benesch scoring the only Chiefs goal of the first period.
Defence again was the first star in the second period, with Steenhuis and Joosh Currier scoring for the Lakers, while Benesch and Jordan Durston responded for the Chiefs.
In the third period the Lakers started out hot with Josh Gillam and Cattoni, with Vaughn Harris and Quinn Powless making it a one goal game with 13 minutes to go.
But with six minutes in regulation, Adam Jones scored the dagger, with Brad Self adding and empty-netter and Shawn Evans scoring for good measure late in the game.
Between the pipes, it was a matchup between two of the National Lacrosse League nominees for Goalie of the Year. Dillon Ward took the loss making 45 saves, while Evan Kirk stopped 37 shots in the win.
The loss puts the Chiefs at 5-3 and in a two-way tie for third place in the Major Series Lacrosse standings with the Oakville Rock. The win gives the Lakers a 6-2 record, which puts them at teh top of the loop, one point ahead of the Brooklin Redmen.
Sunday, the Chiefs are back on the road against the Coburg Kodiaks at 6 p.m. The Kodiaks, won their first game of the season Thursday, an 8-6 decision over the Brampton Excelsiors.
The return home Tuesday at 8 p.m., when they host the Excelsiors.
